Investing in Young Leaders

Investing in Young Leaders

On November 8th, Carol and I had the honour of praying with 2 young Khmer people (Thi & Sam) after a Sunday service as they made a full confession of faith. These young Christians had already made a decision to become Christians for weeks and had been studying the Bible for months, but it is customary for them to wait for a missionary or pastor to formally pray with them in front of the church community when they make a full confession of faith. We felt joy in taking part as official witnesses and to celebrate this awesome milestone for 2 new believers.

Thi and Sam also desired to be baptized the week after on November 14th at a pre-scheduled baptism event. A few churches in the Siem Reap area gathered at the local lake and over 20 new believers went through this symbolic ceremony of faith. While symbolic, it holds a spiritual reality as well; their death (going in the water) and resurrecting with Jesus in a new life (coming out of the water) shows their desire to proclaim their faith publicly.

Unfortunately, in the end, Sam could not get baptized because her family practices a different faith and she did not have her parents’ permission to get baptized. It is very important to honour your parents in Asian culture and choosing to follow a different faith is often perceived as bringing shame to your family. Please pray that Sam will be able to find ways to respect her parents but still follow Jesus, and would one day be able to join in this ceremony.

On Oct 29th, just after the floods ended in Cambodia, Kevin travelled with some team members to another province about 3 hours away in order to visit the staff and students at New Eden Bible School. This is a new Cambodian bible school that we are partnering with which currently has 9 students actively enrolled and living on campus. The school offers a 2 year program in order to teach Biblical Knowledge, Community Service, and Life/Job Skills. The Canadian C&MA team has pledged to sponsor 4 students with their annual school fees. Can you (either as churches or individuals) help us raise $7,000 per year so that we can invest in the lives of young future Christian leaders in Cambodia? Please let us know if you are interested in supporting this initiative. You can use the link below to donate online; please select the fund “New Eden Bible School – Cambodia”.
