It’s nearing exam time for university students back home and we can empathize with the pertinent anxieties and late night cramming sessions. Every 5 weeks we have a Khmer language exam. This week we have another set of assessments. So far we have learnt over 1400 words in Khmer. It doesn’t boost your confidence when your teacher says, “This exam will be difficult, the most difficult you’ve had.”
This term we have been studying reading rules, grammar, and writing in Khmer. We thought this was a purely phonetic language but there are many exceptions because Khmer script has been influenced considerably by Sanskrit (ancient Hindu language) and Pali (language of Buddhist texts). We also go on field trips, learn how to cook Khmer dishes and sample fresh fruit in class during cultural class. It’s hard to believe we have completed almost 4 levels so far. We plan to complete level 6 before we have to move to Siem Reap in July.
Example of a sentence we can read and write:
I am going to study at school today = ខ្ញុំនឹងទៅសាលារៀនថ្ងៃនេះ
Praise & Prayer
- Please pray we will be prepared for our written assessment on March 21 and verbal assessment on March 26.
- Please pray for our kids to play well together so we can study more in peace.
- Praise God we had the opportunity to attend a prayer retreat last week with Canada and US CM&A team
